First summer living near the mountain, hot days are starting, snow is almost gone, time to go for the first summit! To start this summer, I chose the Pic de Bassiès, a +1300m on 17km hike. I went for it to get a benchmark for the rest of the season.

Hiker: Axel Masson (@sonmas)

Hike name: Pic Rouge de Bassiès from Coumebières

Difficulty: T4 – Alpine Hike

Distance: 16,7 km

Height difference: +1350m / -1350m

Summit height: 2676m

Estimated time: 4h15 + 3h30 (photography breaks)

The summit we can see here, was actually not even half of the hike. But the moment I took this picture, I thought it was almost the end, it actually helped!

When I arrived up there, I finally had a view on the summit and realised being not almost at the end. Not even half of it. This was a straight mental uppercut. Thankfully, I had this amazing view on the ponds of Bassiès that immediately gave me positive vibes and strength to continue!⠀

After several thoughts about giving up, because of the snow areas, I continued fighting and finally reached the summit. I was completely drained, but this feeling was totally worth it.

And the 360° view from this summit is incredible! Just have a look at this horizon where the amount you can capture here is endless!⠀

Time to get down what was not the easiest part. I gave all I had while ascending. My knees were shaking, but I tried to keep myself motivated! If you are in my situation: Take a break, rise your head and let the landscape give you strength!⠀
Dumb part I rested: it’s like a natural Neuralyzer (MIB) that erases the pain and puts a smile back on my face⠀

Finally, the last kilometre! My lack of physical preparation made that hike the hardest I’ve done so far. I have to say hiking at the worst hours with 30°C already at 10am didn’t got it easier! Lesson learned, I start training for the next ones!⠀
